The Insititute of Education Sciences’ What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), in conjunction with an expert panel, released a new practice guide, Designing and Delivering Career Pathways at Community Colleges, to be used by administrators, faculty and staff at community colleges. This guide focuses on implementing career pathways or career and technical education (CTE) initiatives that lead to improving postsecondary student learning and labor market outcomes. The guide provides five specific recommendations for supporting occupational training through career pathways:
- Intentionally design and structure career pathways to enable students to further their education, secure a job, and advance in employment.
- Deliver contextualized or integrated basic skills instruction to accelerate students’ entry into and successful completion of career pathways.
- Offer flexible instructional delivery schedules and models to improve credit accumulation and completion of non-degree credentials along career pathways.
- Provide coordinated comprehensive student supports to improve credit accumulation and completion of non-degree credentials along career pathways.
- Develop and continuously leverage partnerships to prepare students and advance their labor market success.
Included with each recommendation is guidance on how to carry out the recommendation, potential obstacles, and tools, resources, and examples to help with implementation at community colleges.
WWC is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 from 3:30–4:30 PM Eastern to introduce the recommendations and strategies from the practice guide. The webinar will include the panel of experts who help create the practice guide.
