I recently joined ACTE as a Policy Research Associate. In this role, I will be working with the Public Policy team to help keep members informed about policy and advocacy, and conducting research about trends, federal and states policies, workforce development, and much more, which I will communicate to members through the various mediums ACTE utilizes. In my first blog post with ACTE, I want to introduce myself and outline why I believe CTE is so important to me.
I was born in a small Kentucky town called Morehead where I was raised by two educators—my mother has been a fourth grade teacher for over 30 years and my father is an English professor. Because I was raised by educators, I have always deeply valued education and the opportunities that it can uncover. My interest in policy started when I became heavily involved in my undergraduate student government, where I could see how small changes made by our organization could widely affect the student body. I came to appreciate the power of listening and advocating for others.
I graduated from Western Kentucky University for my undergraduate studies with degrees in Political Science, Mandarin, and English Literature. My interest in politics and in both domestic and international affairs led me to continue my education by obtaining my graduate degree from Indiana University, Bloomington in public administration, where I concentrated in Policy Analysis and International Development.
Growing up with educators has led me to believe that education is a basic human right that every person has the right to pursue. I also believe that a wide range of paths, not only a linear one, are critical to reach the goal of secondary and post-secondary education success. Advancing CTE in schools will not only lead to higher quality of education, but will also allow students to achieve greater skills, higher earnings, and more opportunities for a wider range of competitive careers.
Outside of my professional career, I am new in the D.C. area so I am looking forward to exploring and becoming more involved in my community. I also enjoy traveling, hiking, and finding new and wonderful food, though I would not consider myself a foodie by any means.
I look forward to promoting CTE on behalf of members as well as keeping members informed on all policy-related issues that could impact CTE. I am happy to be contacted with any questions or comments at any time, and I can be reached at [email protected] or at 703-683-9327.
