The nomination of Michigan State Representative Tim Kelly to serve as the Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) has been withdrawn. Kelly had been scheduled to appear before the Senate education committee for a confirmation hearing on November 15
As Education Week reports, Kelly maintained a blog from 2009 to 2012, at which time he made offensive comments about Muslims, women in STEM, and Head Start families. As a result, Secretary DeVos reportedly decided to pull the nomination. Kelly was also highly critical of CTE in one blog post, saying job training programs had “horrible results.”
Until a new OCTAE Assistant Secretary is nominated and confirmed, Dr. Michael Wooten will continue to serve in the position in an acting capacity.
