Recently, the House Education and the Workforce Committee and Homeland Security Committee held a joint hearing on workforce development issues in cybersecurity and related career fields. Several members of the committees noted the House passage of a Perkins reauthorization bill, H.R. 2353, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, in June as an important step forward in addressing the cybersecurity skills gap. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who cosponsored the H.R. 2353, asked about federal funding for CTE and its role in developing the cyber workforce pipeline. Dr. Scott Ralls, president of Northern Virginia Community College, noted that current funding is not sufficient to meet the demand for career pathways in cybersecurity and other growing fields. “Technical educations is one of the biggest gaps between rhetoric and investment,” said Ralls.
