Three years ago this month, ACTE worked closely with Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Rob Portman (R-OH) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) to send a letter to President Obama asking for his support in expanding the U.S. Presidential Scholars program to include CTE students. The program, first created by President Lyndon B. Johnson, is administered by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and recognizes achievements of distinguished students graduating from high school.
Today, ED announced the second-ever class of CTE presidential scholars. Of the 161 Presidential Scholars this year, 20 students from 16 states were honored for their work in CTE fields. The 2017 Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education are:

- Katelyn Maclean – Arroyo Grande, CA – Nipomo High School
- Johnny Bui – Camden, DE – Caesar Rodney Senior High School
- Chrstie E. Little – Harrington, DE – Lake Forest High School
- Dalton C. Green – Ringgold, GA – Gordon Lee Memorial High School
- Helen J. Smith – Fayetteville, GA – Sandy Creek High School
- Sophia M. Jerkatis – Naperville, IL – Waubonsie Valley High School
- Alkenly S. Ortiz – Lawrence, MA – Greater Lawrence Regional Vo-Tech HS
- Carly Claucherty – Springport, MI – Springport High School
- Curtis Basa – Carson City, NV – Carson High School
- Connor Craige – Laconia, NH – Gilford Middle High School
- Sanjana Duggirala – East Windsor, NJ – Mercer City Tech Schools – Health Science Academy
- Joseph C. Richardson – Belvidere, NC – Perquimans County High School
- Evan C. Welsh – Grand Forks, ND – Grand Forks Central High School
