Earlier today, House Education and the Workforce members Reps. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) reintroduced Perkins reauthorization legislation in the House of Representatives. The bill, named the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, builds on the work of the House during last Congress. Last year, the House Perkins reauthorization bill (H.R. 5587) was passed by the House overwhelmingly by a 405-5 vote but was not considered by the Senate before the end of the 114th Congress.
The new bill, which has not yet been assigned a number, is reportedly very similar to H.R. 5587, although a few small changes have been made. Notably, there have been some efforts to address issues of concern around the applicability of the “CTE Concentrator” definition to some secondary performance indicators, although we are still examining the implications of these changes. ACTE will be carefully reviewing the new bill and releasing an updated summary as soon as possible. Our initial statement on the bill is available here. We expect this bill to be considered by the House Education and the Workforce Committee soon.
The committee has released the following information on the new bill:
This is a great pathway for many unskilled workers. Is there in place a continuance of funds as technology or other employment environments change? I believe its important to understand the constant changing of our workforce and how people are affected when there are changes. For example; Cars are changing. Are the CTE programs updated to keep pace with the innovation changes in the auto industry?

Linda,
Thanks for your question! CTE programs are definitely updated to match changes in the workplace. This occurs through many different channels, including the use of industry advisory boards, curriculum reviews, and certainly equipment upgrades. Perkins funds can be used for these updates as funds allow.
