CTE participation is the best predictor of boys’ persistence in high school.[i] |
While CTE is valuable for all students, the benefits of CTE seem to be particularly strong for young men.
An analysis of what helps students “survive” high school, based on research from the National Research Center for CTE, found that earning three or more CTE credits in a focused program of study predicts boys’ continuing secondary school even more than 9th grade GPA, which is typically a major predictor of high school success. Girls, the analysis found, are not more likely to stay in high school because of CTE participation, but were not harmed by CTE either.
When presenting this data, supplement it with stories about young men (and women) you’ve taught who stayed engaged in high school because of their CTE participation and went on to postsecondary education and career success.
