The perspectives of students in competency-based education (CBE) is the topic of a recent Young Invincibles report. Through a series of focus groups, interviews and a survey, Young Invincibles found that:
- Flexibility is the major benefit of CBE
- CBE students move at different paces
- CBE works better for more mature, organized, self-starter students
- CBE students appreciate being able to speak with instructors or coaches, but also report less need for face-to-face interaction than other students
- CBE is well-placed for teaching specific job skills, but programs may struggle with teaching teamwork and other employability skills
The report also provides policy recommendations, including:
- Launching U.S. Department of Education CBE experimental sites
- Providing transparent information to prospective CBE students
- Continuing to conduct research on CBE, including outcomes and the role of financial aid
- Ensuring user-friendly technology for CBE platforms
- Ensuring comprehensive and individualized academic and social supports
