Today, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) announced its “Promising Pathways” initiative, which will bring together secondary and postsecondary education professionals alongside leaders from city governments and business and industry groups around a common goal – expanding CTE programs in growing communities as a way to increase opportunity for students. Through Promising Pathways, about $500,000 from AFT’s Innovation Fund will be invested to support their local affiliates’ partnerships and efforts to expand CTE in Peoria, IL, Pittsburgh, PA, San Francisco, CA and Miami, FL; as well as a concurrent effort in New York City, NY.
“CTE teachers help students develop the ability to collaborate, communicate, solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge. These are the skills kids need to thrive in our fast-changing world,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten in a release today.
The CTE programs under Promising Pathways will be aligned to the needs of local employers, and help to further the education and career aspirations of students in these cities. Weingarten has previously expressed her support for CTE programs, both at last year’s CTE Summit alongside Vice President Joe Biden and at ACTE’s National Policy Seminar in 2015.
