We need to “train workers to make them as skilled as possible” through pathways that lead to two- and four-year degrees and postsecondary certificates, said Vice President Joe Biden today at an event hosted by The Hamilton Project (THP) of the Brookings Institution.
Vice President Biden also spoke about the need to reinvigorate the middle class and make it easier for people to enter employment, and announced the White House Entrepreneurship Demo Day.
Following the Vice President’s speech, panelists discussed recent THP papers. Reforming Occupational Licensing Policies examines research on the pros and cons of strict licensing requirements. Author Morris M. Kleiner proposes reforms that would make entrance requirements less restrictive for occupations in which health and safety is not a prime consideration, including changing the requirements for certain jobs from licensing to certification and outsourcing certification to third parties. In addition, two other publications explore ways to encourage reemployment through the unemployment insurance system and to develop avenues to entrepreneurship for women and minorities.
