Employers made full-time job offers to almost 65 percent of postsecondary interns, and these former interns were more likely to be retained by that employer one year and five years out.[i] |
Internships can often lead to employment, and to employees that are dedicated to the company that gave them an opportunity, as this data points out.
Today's internships include challenging tasks, not just coffee and copies. Internship postings commonly ask for technical skill sets relevant to the position, including specific skills and software, according to an analysis of more than 275,000 online internship postings conducted by Burning Glass Technologies. Internships and other work-based learning experiences are increasingly important in preparing students for successful careers. They are considered vital by employers, too. An internship is the single most valuable thing to have on your resume entering the workforce, according to a survey of employers conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education and American Public Media's Marketplace.
When sharing this data, back it up with stories about your students who have successfully leveraged work-based learning into better education and employment outcomes, on both the secondary and postsecondary levels.
